Hand Wound Monday: Volar Wrist Tumor

Another case of the week:

The patient was brought to surgery, with the presumptive diagnoses of volar wrist ganglion versus patent radial artery aneurysm versus ...other tumor. At exploration, the tumor was found to be a dark purplish lobulated mass.

The mass was immediately radial to a normal radial artery, and with careful dissection was shown to be separate from the artery. It turned out to be filled with a mucinous dark liquid, consistent with old hemorrhage into a volar wrist ganglion. Further dissection uncovered a narrow stalk leading down to the scaphotrapezial joint, and a local joint debridement was performed.
